How Does Breast Augmentation Work?

Submuscular

The method places the implant under the pectoralis major muscle which is the representative chest muscle, and as the muscle is located between the breast tissues and the implant, a fundamental blocking element occurs against the breast tissues. This is the foundation of the anatomic basis proving that the implants give does not affect the normal function of breast tissues. In addition, sub glandular procedure may be more painful but there is any reason specified otherwise, the submuscular positioning is the most often used procedure.

Benefits of Submuscular Procedure
– Can correctly fix the inframammary line during the procedure.
– The breasts look good since the breasts are relocated to the perfect spot.
– Fast recovery.

Subgrandular (or above the pectoral muscles)

This is a method that was used often in the past and involves placing the breast implant between the chest tissues and pectoralis major muscle with the 0.9% saline bag. One of the benefits of this operation is that the breasts are able to look symmetrical as different amounts of saline can be injected into the bags, evening out the shape. However, the saline may leak from the bag years after the surgery and may reduce in size. It is not generally used.

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that involves increasing the size and enhancing the shape of the breasts. It is typically done using breast implants or fat transfer techniques.

Good candidates for breast augmentation are individuals who are physically healthy, have realistic expectations, and desire to enhance the size or shape of their breasts. It’s important to consult with a qualified plastic surgeon to determine if you are a suitable candidate.

There are primarily two types of breast implants: saline implants and silicone implants. Saline implants are filled with sterile saltwater solution, while silicone implants are filled with silicone gel. Each type has its own advantages and considerations, which can be discussed with your surgeon to choose the most suitable option for you.

During the procedure, the surgeon will make incisions in predetermined locations, such as under the breast, around the nipple, or in the armpit. They will then create a pocket to place the breast implants either behind the breast tissue or beneath the chest muscle. After positioning the implants correctly, the incisions will be closed with sutures.

The recovery period varies from person to person, but generally, patients can expect some swelling, bruising, and discomfort in the days following surgery. Pain medication may be prescribed to manage any discomfort. It is important to follow your surgeon’s instructions regarding post-operative care, including wearing a supportive bra and avoiding strenuous activities.

As with any surgical procedure, breast augmentation carries some risks. Potential risks include infection, bleeding, adverse reactions to anesthesia, changes in nipple or breast sensation, scarring, implant rupture, and the need for future surgeries. Discussing these risks with your surgeon beforehand is crucial.

Breast implants, whether saline or silicone, should not generally interfere with breastfeeding. However, it’s possible that breastfeeding difficulties may arise due to unrelated factors. Breast implants can make mammograms more challenging to interpret, so it’s important to inform the mammography technician about your implants beforehand to ensure proper technique and imaging.

Breast implants are not considered lifetime devices. While they are designed to be long-lasting, they may require replacement or removal at some point. The lifespan of implants can vary, but it is recommended to monitor their condition and have regular follow-ups with your surgeon.
